1899 episode 1 explained: What happened in The Ship?

The other passengers

All of the passengers on the Kerberos seemed to be hiding something with questions over whether brothers Ramiro (José Pimentão) and Ángel (Miguel Bernardeau) really were siblings and if the former was a real priest when he seemed to hesitate about going over to the Prometheus.

Then there were the Chinese women Ling Yi (Isabella Wei) and her mother Yuk Je (Gabby Wong), who were pretending to be Japanese for an unknown reason.

Meanwhile, there was the lower-class Danish family including Tove and her brother Krester (Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen), who wanted to make a fresh start in the New World.

Ángel also seemed to have taken a keen interest in Krester, despite his lower status.

Another puzzling duo was French honeymooners Lucien (Jonas Bloquet) and Clémence (Mathilde Ollivier), who seemed unhappy and sexually unfulfilled together.

Needless to say, all the characters were running away from something – but what?

1899 is streaming on Netflix now
