BBC commentator Guy Mowbray took 37 minutes to realise which goalkeeper was between the posts for Morocco as they took on Belgium at the World Cup on Sunday. Yassine Bounou started for the African side in their opening game against Croatia, but Munir El Kajoui was named to take on Roberto Martinez’s side.
In the 37th minute Mowbray noted that he made a mistake and did not notice the late change in goal. “One thing I should have noticed earlier on, which I apologise for is a change in goal for Morocco at the start,” Mowbray admitted on commentary. “You know at the start when we saw the goalkeeper running on I hadn’t seen his number it was number 12 El Kajoui in goal, Munir El Kajoui.”
Former England and Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas was on co-commentary duties alongside Mowbray, and made sure to poke fun at his colleague for the error. “Forgot to do your job did you?”
Mowbray replied: “OK, OK, I can see his number now. Looks similar to Bounou to me. We are trying to find out what happened to him.
“Apparently he might have been taken ill just before the match so that’s why there was that little delay when we were waiting for the Morocco team photo and the shaking hands with Eden Hazard.”
