Cristiano Ronaldo only has four options to quit Man Utd after Chelsea and two other snubs

Cristiano Ronaldo will need to think carefully about which club to join next if he leaves Manchester United in advance of the new Premier League season. The Portuguese maestro is believed to be keen on seeking a new challenge over the coming weeks after the Red Devils failed to secure Champions League qualification at the end of the previous campaign.

A number of top sides have been credited with an interest in securing Ronaldo’s signature in recent days, including the likes of Chelsea and Bayern Munich. However, it seems as though the 37-year-old will be forced to look elsewhere for a new club to join, with his chances of signing for either of the aforementioned duo fading fast.

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly is said to be a huge fan of Ronaldo and would like to bring the five-time Ballon d’Or winner to Stamford Bridge in order to make a splash in his new role with the Blues. Thomas Tuchel is not as keen on the proposed switch, though, and is believed to have concerns over whether Ronaldo would be the right fit at the top of the pitch for his side next season.

Bayern Munich are also said to have snubbed the opportunity to land Ronaldo ahead of the new campaign, which leaves only a few options in the market for the United striker to weigh up before the on-pitch action gets back underway. One of those could be a potential move to Napoli, who are thought to be keeping a close eye on Ronaldo’s current situation at Old Trafford.

The Serie A heavyweights have been tipped to launch an ambitious bid for Ronaldo since the end of last month and would crucially be able to offer him the Champions League football that he so desperately craves. They could face stiff competition from Roma, though, with Jose Mourinho also believed to be eyeing a surprise move for the player that he managed during his time in charge of Real Madrid.

However, it remains to be seen whether Ronaldo would be willing to reunite with Mourinho given the history of their turbulent working relationship at the Bernabeu. The pair reportedly clashed multiple times and it seems unlikely that the United man would be keen on playing under Mourinho once again, while Roma’s failure to qualify for next season’s Champions League may also put them on the back foot in negotiations.

Meanwhile, a romantic return to Sporting for Ronaldo is among the other possibilities to have been mentioned over the last few weeks. He shone as a teenager on their books before signing for United back in 2003 and is known to have retained a fondness for the club, but his mega-money wage demands could pose a number of issues in terms of the likelihood of such a move.

Perhaps the most left-field rumour of them all suggests that Barcelona may be interested in signing Ronaldo this summer in spite of his status as one of Real Madrid’s greatest ever players. The Catalan giants would certainly be up against it, although Ronaldo’s apparent willingness to entertain Manchester City’s advances last summer could point towards a hugely surprising move to the Nou Camp being within the realms of possibility.

United boss Erik ten Hag has already insisted that Ronaldo is not for sale regardless of whether or not he wishes to find a new club over the coming weeks and months. However, it seems likely that the forward would only be able to choose between a series of less-than-ideal destinations after being snubbed by Chelsea and Bayern Munich if the Red Devils decide to soften their stance against a move elsewhere in the near future.
