Dancing On Ice: Colin Jackson chose not to have same-sex partner

Dancing On Ice’s Colin Jackson says he turned down the opportunity to have a same-sex partner on the ITV show as he ‘gets on better with women’

Colin Jackson has revealed that he turned down the opportunity to have a same-sex partner on Dancing On Ice.

The BBC presenter and former Olympic hurdler, 53, who came out as gay aged 50 in 2017, is partnered with Klabera Komini on the ITV show.

Dancing On Ice made history in 2020 with its first-ever same-sex pairing after Steps star Ian ‘H’ Watkins skated alongside professional Matt Evers.

Speaking in a new interview, Colin revealed that he could have opted for a male partner but he chose a woman instead as he ‘gets on better with women’.

He told The Sun: ‘I could have danced with a man on DOI. But I didn’t want to. I get on better with women to be honest.

‘Me and my dance partner Klabera have an absolute blast. We are giggling all the time – and sharing too many sweets – mainly wine gums!’

Colin, who finished as a runner-up on Strictly Come Dancing in 2005 with Erin Boag, continued: ‘Also I’m a bit of a traditionalist – when I was on Strictly I danced with a woman too.’

The presenter added that Ian and Matt were ‘absolutely brilliant’ on the 2020 series and it was ‘fantastic’ that they made history.

Elsewhere, in a separate interview ahead of the show’s launch this Sunday, Colin said he wanted to do Dancing On Ice as its a ‘life skill’.

He said: ‘It’s a life skill and the opportunity to work with true professionals who are great at what they do.

‘It’s an honour to be able to do that, there’s only a certain amount of people who get that opportunity and I’m one of the lucky people to have the opportunity.

‘So, for me, it’s a personal challenge, a great challenge and with the best people that I could possibly ask to go on this journey with. I’m looking forward to that more than anything else.’

Colin also spoke about when he appeared on Dancing on Ice Goes Gold in 2012, a one-off special with Olympians, he added: ‘I think truly it’s unfinished business really. On that show we only had very limited time on the ice to try and learn a real skill.

‘Doing the actual show gives you far more time to actually hone something and to learn something properly, more in depth. For me I had a bit of a taster back then, I’d never skated before and I’ve never skated since!

‘I literally haven’t gone on the ice since but I really wish I had now. I’ll have to relearn everything as it’s been such a long time.

‘It genuinely feels brand-new, brand-new partner and everything so I’m excited.’

The new series of Dancing On Ice will see the judges protected by perspex screens and no studio audience amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Newly released images of the ITV show’s studios last week saw large screens placed in front of the judges chairs to shield Ashley Banjo, John Barrowman, Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean.

The judging panel will also be sat far apart, keeping in line with social distancing measures.

For the first time in its history the studio at Bovingdon Airfield in Hertfordshire will have no audience, a move mirroring that of Strictly Come Dancing.

The skating celebrities will also watch each other perform from socially-distanced tables to keep everyone safe from COVID-19.

Dancing On Ice 2021 starts this Sunday at 6pm on ITV.
