It’s a good idea to keep a blanket, some de-icer, a map and something to eat and drink in the car, plus the vehicle should always have a warning triangle if the worst should happen.

It will be much harder to stop on a snow covered or frozen road, with experts recommending leaving as much as 10 times the normal gap to the next car.
