France and Germany shamed for selling deadly weapons to Putin despite embargo

The embargo against Moscow was introduced with Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014, but France, Germany and Italy continued to provide deadly weapons and vehicles to the Communist country.

According to a leaked documents, France issued more than 70 licences to export military equipment to companies worth €152 million (£128).

Confronted, the French Armed Forces ministry confirmed that France “allowed “the execution of certain contracts concluded before 2014”, which was allowed under the embargo.

Germany and Italy also provided rifles and armoured cars to Russia, whilst France provided bombs, rockets and explosives.

The embargo allowed countries to fulfil contracts they had signed with Russia before 2014, giving France and other EU states up until 2020 to provide Moscow with its military ammunition.

The contracts allowed Russia’s military to grow and the weapons provided by the west are now believed to being used against civilians in Ukraine.

More than 350,000 people are sheltering in the besieged southern port of Mariupol, officials said, while Russia’s defence ministry said separatists with help from Russia’s armed forces were “tightening the noose” around the city.

Rescuers are combing the rubble of a theatre in Mariupol bombed on Wednesday for survivors. Russia denies striking it.

Italy said it will rebuild it.

Vladimir Putin shows little desire to compromise, they said, while Ukraine wants to retain sovereignty over areas occupied since 2014 by Russia and pro-Russian forces.

Russia accused the United States of stoking “Russophobia” and said it had the power to put its “brash enemies into place”.

The UN Security Council pulled a vote on a Russian-drafted call for aid access and civilian protection in Ukraine.

Diplomats said the measure was set to fail because it does not push for an end to the fighting or withdrawal of Russian troops.
