Hot weather LIVE: School, road, rail and water alerts as UK faces 41C – Red warning issued

Parts of the UK are likely to feel record-breaking temperatures today, with the Met Office issuing its first-ever red warning for extreme heat as the mercury could rise to more than 40C. Meteorologists have given an 80 percent chance of the mercury topping the UK’s record temperature of 38.7C, set in Cambridge in 2019, with temperatures in London expected to hit 40C on Tuesday.

The shocking rise in temperatures has caused the UK Health Security Agency to issue a level 4 heat-health alert, with even non-vulnerable people potentially experiencing poor health in the blistering heat.

Level four “is reached when a heatwave is so severe and/or prolonged that its effects extend outside the health and social care system, such as power or water shortages, and/or where the integrity of health and social care systems is threatened,” according to the agency.

Transport providers are urging people to only travel if necessary, and many services will be reduced or running slowly so tracks do not buckle or warp.

Network Rail and Transport for London (TFL) is advising passengers to only travel for “essential journeys”.

The NHS is bracing itself for a surge in the numbers of people admitted to hospital, and ambulances have special plans in place to deal with heightened demand.

New Health Secretary Steve Barclay said more call handlers and extra working hours are part of the additional contingency support for ambulance services.
