Huw Edwards 'fascinated' as Queen and Duke of Kent have long conversation on balcony

The BBC presenter spotted the pair having a lengthy chat as they observed Trooping the Colour participants march toward Buckingham Palace. The Queen did not personally take the salute on Horse Guards Parade due to ongoing mobility issues but was treated to soldiers performing in her honour on the way back from the ceremony. The Duke of Kent stood ramrod straight next to his eldest cousin, seemingly exchanging commentary about the performance, leaving Huw Edwards “fascinated” and wondering about their conversation.

Co-presenter JJ Chalmers joined in: “So would I.

“And I think if the Guardsmen saw the pointing going on, they’ll be in sixes and sevens, whether they’re wondering if they’d be pleased to see they’re being pointed at or not.”

The Duke of Kent is one of less than 20 members of the Royal Family allowed to join the Queen on the balcony during the RAF flypast.

Her Majesty limited the numbers to only working members of the Royal Family, thus excluding granddaughters Beatrice and Eugenie as well as Prince Harry, Meghan Markle and Prince Andrew.

The Queen donned a dusky dove blue Angela Kelly coat which she wore for her official portrait, and a matching hat.

As in recent outings, the 96-year-old monarch was holding a walking stick and wearing the Guards’ Badge on her coat.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were among the guests who watched Trooping the Colour at Horse Guards, although they have yet to be publicly pictured.

They joined a host of royals including the Duchess of Cambridge and Duchess of Cornwall in the Duke of Wellington’s former office the parade ground.

It is believed to be the first time Kate and Meghan have met in person since the Sussexes left in 2020 for a new life in America.
