President Biden, 80, the oldest President of the US and Mr Macron, 44, France’s youngest President demonstrated a united front and toasted the ties between the two nations. On the South Lawn, Biden and his wife Jill, and Macron and his wife Brigitte, gave a toast on a pavilion where Biden said: “To the history that binds and the values that still unit us.”

Holding aloft a flute of California brut rosé, while teetotal Biden had ginger ale, Macron gave a small toast in French with a backdrop of an image of the Statue of Liberty which was a gift from France.

He said: “Long live the United States of America, long live France and long live the friendship between our two countries.”

He concluded in English, saying: “Cheers. Thank you.”

The lavish state dinner saw a performance by American singer Jon Batiste and attendees including Vogue editor Anna Wintour, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, and singer John Legend.

Guests were taken from the White House to the pavilion where there were 33 dining tables with which were decorated with the American colours with blue, red and white flowers on navy tablecloths.

The pavilion made out of vinyl, glass and wood had chandeliers with false flickering candles hanging above the tables.

During the event, the First Lady told President Macron that both she and her husband are prepared to announce his re-election campaign for 2024, according to people familiar with the conversation, the New York Times reported.

Dr Biden sat at the head of the table where she was joined by Macron and his wife along with French officials and Nancy Pelosi.
