Liverpool team news: Expected XI vs Burnley as Jurgen Klopp faces three tough calls

Liverpool will be keen to get off to a winning start back in front of a capacity crowd at Anfield as they welcome Burnley to Merseyside in the Premier League’s early kick-off on Saturday, and Jurgen Klopp has decisions to make when it comes to his starting XI. Express Sport looks at the team he could name.

    Goalkeeper: Alisson

A straightforward pick between the sticks, Alisson has never kept a clean sheet at home to Burnley after a 1-0 defeat to the same opponents last time out in January.

The Brazilian kept out Norwich on the opening weekend of the new Premier League season and he is looking to better the disappointing 10 shut-outs he managed last season.

Having Virgil van Dijk should help with the Dutchman back to help marshal Liverpool’s back-line against the likes of Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes.

Defence: Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk, Matip, Tsimikas

Having managed 90 minutes at Carrow Road, Van Dijk should start again in central defence against Burnley and will be crucial in helping cope with the Clarets’ set-piece threat.

Joe Gomez is back in training and started alongside Ibrahima Konate, on the bench at Norwich, in a 4-1 behind-closed-doors friendly victory over Aston Villa last weekend.

But Joel Matip should partner Van Dijk having done so against the Canaries while Trent Alexander-Arnold will be entrusted as the team’s chief creative force from right-back.

On the left, Andy Robertson was only back in full training on Friday after an ankle problem and so Kostas Tsimikas will get another chance to impress in his first taste of a sold-out Anfield.

    Midfielder: Henderson, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Thiago

Fabinho is expected to miss the visit of Burnley on compassionate grounds after his father passed away earlier this week, according to the Press Association via BT Sport.

James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were the starting trio at Norwich and all might have dropped to the bench here if Fabinho were available.

If the Brazilian is indeed out, Klopp’s midfield make-up is made a little easier though he still faces a couple of tricky choices.

    Attack: Salah, Firmino, Mane

Mohamed Salah picks himself on the right flank but especially after his one-goal, two-assist display at Norwich, where he was the man of the match.

The Egyptian is two goals shy of 100 Premier League strikes and will be a popular captaincy choice for Fantasy Premier League managers.

Sadio Mane scored just three league goals at Anfield last season, down from 11 the previous campaign, and the Senegalese will be eager to crown the return of supporters with a goal here.

Klopp’s final selection headache comes through the middle. Both Diogo Jota, who started at Norwich, and Roberto Firmino, who came off the bench, got themselves on the scoresheet.

Firmino has netted five in his last six appearances against the Clarets and his superior creativity and link-up play may be plucked for over Jota’s more expert finishing in order to help break down the away side.

Liverpool expected XI vs Burnley: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk, Matip, Tsimikas; Henderson, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Thiago; Salah, Firmino, Mane.
