Manchester United have confirmed their second marquee signing of the summer in the form of star Real Madrid and France defender Raphael Varane. After years of defensive uncertainty, the Red Devils have stumped up a fee that could reach £41million, with the defender signing a four-year contract.
After months of negotiations with Los Blancos chiefs, United have finally got their man as they sought after a much-needed partner for England hero Harry Maguire.
Varane, 28, has put pen to paper on a four-year contract at Old Trafford – with an option to extend to a fifth – on a wage believed to be worth £200,000 per week, in their second marquee signing of the summer following Jadon Sancho’s move from Borussia Dortmund.
According to Spotrac, the Frenchman will be one of United’s top earners, ranking only behind David de Gea (£375,000 per-week), Jadon Sancho (£350,000), Paul Pogba (£290,000), Anthony Martial (£250,000) and Edinson Cavani (£210,000) – although it is rumoured that Martial and Pogba could leave this summer.
Having joined Real Madrid from RC Lens 10 years ago, Varane made a total of 360 appearances for the Spanish giants.
And with three La Liga titles, four Champions Leagues, four FIFA Club World Cups and a Copa del Rey to his name, the Lille-born defender brings a wealth of experience to Old Trafford that any current player will be seldom pressed to match.

With Bailly and Lindelof acting as back-ups to Maguire and Varane, United fans will finally be at piece with their squad depth.
