Massive 42m-wide RAF plane spotted circling over Cornwall at 12,000ft

Reports have emerged of an RAF transport plane currently circling the skies over Cornwall, after flying out of RAF Brize Norton this morning (November 25).

The Airbus A-400M is currently circling over the areas of Helston and Porthleven near RNAS Culdrose at an altitude of around 3,700 feet.

The craft, carrying the callsign ASCOT469, has flown out of the RAF Brize Norton base in Oxfordshire and begun holding position in the skies over Cornwall. Its path from the base took it over Swindon, the Somerset Levels and Dartmoor.

A similar craft was recently involved in trials to test the ability to load and transport weapons systems in Romania, reports CornwallLive. The tests were carried out at Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base in Romania to rapidly deploy NATO capabilities.

This is the second time in a month this type of craft has been seen over Cornwall. Another A400M was spotted flying low over the region on October 28, with an onlooker saying: “It was an absolutely amazing sight. I was walking my 4 Hungarian vizslas on the beach with my family at the time.”

The RAF plane flew on that day towards Padstow before looping around Plymouth, Salcombe and south Devon. It’s altitude remained at less than 1000ft as it flew over Exeter and turned towards the Dorset coastline.

The plane touched down briefly at RNAS Culdrose at around 9.30am, before heading up the north Cornish coast towards south Wales.

By 9.52am the craft had risen to just shy of 12,000ft and has set off in a north-westerly direction from St Ives.
