Britons are expected to spend £84.7billion this Christmas and seven in 10 say they enjoy buying Christmas gifts for loved ones. Christmas may turn out to be an expensive holiday for Britons, but it should not derail them from all the fun and cheer of the season.

In the big spenders’ category, it was followed by Leicester and Northampton.

Glasgow was also the city with the best chance of a white Christmas, followed by Leeds and Newcastle.

The best Christmas markets were in Birmingham, London and Manchester.

For the best shopping, however, London, Birmingham and Belfast took the top three spots.

DON’T MISS

On Facebook, Esta Robertson reviewed Birmingham Frankfurt Market and said: “Great atmosphere last night in the market and around Birmingham in general. Good to see people having fun.”

Liss Burrows said: “Fantastic stalls with amazing gifts! Fun things to see and try! Staff on the stalls were friendly and most items were fairly-priced.

“Fantastic atmosphere and great location for it. Only downside was the pure amount of people there made it difficult to spend a decent amount of time looking at the merchandise but that’s what happens with big events so expected!”

The German market is not Birmingham’s only Christmas market, with City social and Christmas in Cathedral Square Market also worth a visit.

There are also Christmas fairs for the best Christmas shopping options.

Birmingham has loads of Christmassy things to do, from a family-friendly Walking with the Snowman Trail to Breakfast with Santa at IKEA.

And there are a Snow Village at House of Fraser and a Christmas Window Trail in the Jewellery Quarter.

This year, one of Glasgow’s Christmas markets has been cancelled.

The light switch on has also been cancelled.

But this doesn’t mean the city isn’t a fantastic place to be for Christmas, with a market at St Enoch Square and the Festival Village at Candleriggs also going ahead.
