Truss tightens shackles on Putin's war machine – UK announces major new retaliation

The Foreign Secretary announced the new measures this morning, targeting strategic industries, banks and business elites. Britain has now sanctioned over 1,000 individuals and businesses since the Ukraine invasion on February 24.

The latest sanctions target the stepdaughter of Russia’s foreign minister Sergei Lavrov, Polina Kovaleva, and billionaire oil tycoon Eugene Shvidler among others.

Britain has also sanctioned Galina Danilchenko, who was installed by Russia as the “mayor” of the Ukrainian city of Melitopol after Putin’s forces kidnapped the legitimate holder of the office.

It is the first time a Ukrainian has been hit with measures for collaborating with Russia.

Ms Danilchenko is a former member of the city’s council.

She was a part of the pro-Russia Opposition Bloc political party founded in 2014 after the invasion of Crimea.

When Russia stormed Melitopol it removed the legitimately elected Ivan Fedorov and replaced the 33-year-old with their sympathetic collaborator.

Ms Truss said: “These oligarchs, businesses and hired thugs are complicit in the murder of innocent civilians and it is right that they pay the price.

“Putin should be under no illusions – we are united with our allies and will keep tightening the screw on the Russian economy to help ensure he fails in Ukraine.

“There will be no let-up.”

As well as targeting a number of individuals, six more Russian banks and the world’s largest diamond producer, Alrosa, have also been sanctioned.

Those sanctioned will have their UK assets frozen, preventing Britons and businesses from doing business with them.

It means they will be unable to access funds in any UK bank accounts.

Individuals sanctioned are also subject to travel bans.

The Government said the latest steps mean Britain has imposed sanctions on banks with total assets of £500billion pounds and oligarchs and family members with a net worth of more than £150billion.
