Valtteri Bottas' Mercedes exit plan in jeopardy as Toto Wolff's star fancies F1 shot

Newly-crowned Formula E World Champion Nyck de Vries says he feels “honoured” by comments from Toto Wolff saying he felt the Mercedes EQ driver deserved a chance in Formula One.

The Dutchman has been linked to Williams, if George Russell were to partner Lewis Hamilton next season, leaving current Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas with one less option for 2022.

The Mercedes team principal was quoted ahead of the season finale saying De Vries and fellow reserve Stoffel Vandoorne deserved a shot in Formula One and hopes there would be a chance for them on the grid.

Vandoorne raced in Formula One for McLaren alongside Fernando Alonso when the team were struggling over the 2016/17 and 17/18 season before switching to the all-electric series.

“Both of them won the most important junior series [FIA Formula 2, formerly GP2 Series],” Wolff said.

“Stoffel was thrown in a situation with McLaren that was difficult to handle back in the day.
