Wigan star Charlie Wyke stable after collapsing in training and being rushed to hospital

Wigan Athletic striker Charlie Wyke is reportedly in a stable condition after being rushed off to hospital following a collapse in training. The incident came just days after John Fleck was hurried off the pitch in similar fashion for Sheffield United, prompting concern during their away trip to Reading.

Wyke fell ill during a Wigan training session earlier this week in which they were preparing for a League One match against Cambridge United.

The 28-year-old initially received medical treatment from the club’s medical staff, before being whisked off to hospital.

At present, he is being closely monitored, but he is communicating with family and staff.

In terms of club duties, Wyke will be made unavailable for the time being.

Wigan Chief Executive, Mal Brannigan, said: “First and foremost, the absolute priority for everyone associated with Wigan Athletic is Charlie’s health and wellbeing and providing support to him and his family.

“As a club, we would like to place on record our sincere appreciation to all of the staff within the NHS who, within what we know are challenging times, were excellent in their response and subsequent care for Charlie, working together with our medical team.

“Clearly this news will cause alarm, though we would politely request that the privacy of Charlie and his family is respected.

“At the appropriate time, we will look to provide further updates to our supporters.”
