Young homeowner has police on her doorstep after neighbour accuses her of squatting

One young woman took to Reddit after her new neighbour refused to believe she owned her new home. At only 20-years-old, she managed to purchase the home cheaply when the owner passed away. However, the young woman was not expecting to be met with suspicion by her 50-year-old neighbour.

Results from Statista show that in the years 2019-2020, 16-24 year olds made up a mere 0.7 percent of homeowners in England.

However, the young woman was not expecting to be met with suspicion by her fifty-year-old neighbour.

The new home owner’s first encounter with her neighbour was awkward.

She told Reddit: “My next-door neighbour, I’ll call her Jane, came out and introduced herself. I explained that I just moved in and was preparing my yard for spring.”

Her neighbour retorted that it was “nice that someone was doing some work for the old man” but that she “shouldn’t have parties”.

When the 20-year-old her she would be having a housewarming soon, the neighbour yet again was unwilling to accept that she was not renting and had indeed bought the house herself.

On another occasion, when painting her front door, her neighbour was not best pleased.

She “stormed over” and told her that she “better have permission to paint someone else’s house”.

Despite explaining again that she owned the house, her neighbour demanded proof.

When she did not comply, the neighbour called the police and accused her of being a squatter.

When the police arrived, she showed them her documents and asked them to remove Jane from her home.

She said: “Jane is still angry.”

One user commented: “Your neighbour made an enemy of you, not the other way around. She bullied you because of your age, this is not your fault.”

Another user offered the opinion: “Yes, to keep the peace, showing her proof of ownership may have been an option, but you shouldn’t have to prove yourself to everyone that’s questioning you because of your age.

Reddit users were quick to point out that she was being discriminated against. Ageism refers to the practice of discriminating against someone because of their age.
